Dimmable glass has many uses and is often used as a partition in conference rooms, offices, schools, hospitals, or to replace solid walls in hotel bathrooms, etc. Users simply flip a switch or press a remote control button to switch the switchable glass between opaque or crystal clear to provide privacy or a transparent spacious environment. in principle
Dimmable glass, or more formally dimmable transparent glass (STG), is formed by laminating two sheets of glass with a PDLC (polymer dispersed liquid crystal) film through a tightly controlled special manufacturing process. Dimmable glass changes light transmission properties when a changing electric field, light or heat is applied. When a voltage is applied to the electrodes of the dimming glass, the electric field between the two pieces of glass makes the liquid crystal molecules in the PDLC align along the direction of the electric field, allowing light to pass through the glass, thereby changing the state to transparent or clear. However, when no electric field is applied, the liquid crystal molecules align randomly, causing light to scatter, resulting in a translucent or opaque state.
