Cement is a binding material that binds the aggregate and reinforcement together. As technology has evolved, so has the quality and variety of cement. Therefore, there are different types of cement for different construction projects.

According to the hardening and setting mechanism, cement is mainly divided into two categories. all these are-

Apart from these main types, there are many types of cements depending on the composition and properties. The following are other cement types:

In the United States, three different standards may apply, depending on the type of cement. For Portland cement types, ASTM C150 describes:

Type II (MH) Moderate heat of hydration (and moderate sulfate resistance)
Type III high early strength
Type IV Low Hydration
Type V High Sulfate Resistance

For hybrid hydraulic cements specified in ASTM C595, the following nomenclature is used:

IS Type Portland Slag Cement
IP Type Portland-Pozzolan Cement
IT type ternary mixed cement

In addition, some blended cements have special properties verified by additional testing. These are designated by the letter in parentheses after the cement type. For example, type IP(MS) is a portland pozzolan cement with moderate sulfate resistance. Other special properties are designated by (HS), for high sulfate resistance; (A), for air-entrained cement; (MH), for moderate heat of hydration; and (LH), for low heat of hydration. However, as the industry is interested in performance-based specifications, ASTM C1157 describes cement by its performance attributes:
